Images from England
In 2005, we spent six months in England as I was Resident Director for
Wheaton's UK study abroad program. As such, we lived near the south
coast in the tiny town
of Kingston near Lewes in East Sussex.
We also had the opportunity to visit Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, and
Germany.

Skiing
It's sort of safe. As long as you don't make a
mistake and ski into a crevasse and die.
This is a quote from my buddy, Paul Franz, who is one of my ski partners
in crime. He told me this as we were planning the trip pictured at
right. Yep, that's me telemark skiing in the powder in the Vail,
Colorado, backcountry.
We stayed at one of the 10th
Mountain Division huts, which I highly recommend if you're looking
for some adventure. If you look really hard, you might see the hut
we stayed at in this picture. It
was a tad bit stormy that day. I've done similar skiing near
Telluride, Colorado, staying at a more rustic (you can ask me
what was rustic about it) hut in the
San Juan Hut System.
If you don't want to hike all the way up, you can go heli skiing.
I've done that at Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.
Here's a movie of me skiing at Kirkwood, California, in January of 2002 (© Jim Teresco; used by permission). The conditions weren't very good, but it beats work! |
|
More quotes from Paul:
Ski hard, ski fast, and get a lot of air.
I would rather have seen the sport of skiing die than have
snowboarding be developed.
And one from Brian Maynard, a Cannon Mountain local:
If it's not blue, it's not ice.
Ski Conditions
"In the end you will be judged
not by your wealth, your knowledge,
or your contribution to mankind,
But by how hard you skied.
(We could be wrong about this, but ski hard anyway, just to be safe)"
Hiking
When there's no snow, go hiking!

My Heritage
My mother is from a tiny town called Tauperlitz. It was founded
in 1348 (!), and I was there for its 650th anniversary. This tiny village is
located just outside of
Hof (an
der Saale), Germany, in the northern end of Bavaria. The
coat of arms on the left, above, is that of Bavaria; the other is that of Hof.
This part of upper Bavaria is devoted mostly to farming, textiles, and, of
course, making beer.
Below
is an overhead shot of the lower end of Hof's main street (Ludwigstrasse):
The church in the upper center is
St. Michael's . Opposite the church is the town
hall. If one were to continue along the street to the right, one
would come upon St. Mary's (Marienkirche),
where my parents were married. On the way, one would pass one of many
cafes , as well as one or more of
the locally famous
"Wurstlemaener", or sausage vendors.
They set up shop with their little portable grills and sell (cheaply!) the most
delicious Bavarian sausages one can find!
