Chartley Iron Works

In 1695, Thomas and James Leonard built the Chartley Iron Works at the corner of South Worcester and West Main streets. Bog iron was dug along the banks of Stony Brook which flowed through the area where Chartley Pond is today. In 1872, William A. Sturdy built the first jewelry shop in town on this site. In 1911, a fire destroyed much of the building. The Sturdy family rebuilt and continued operating the jewelry company for many years in the Sturdy Brothers building.
